Ruffhouse Industries resident Koala returns to the Munich label for his ‘Unnerve’ EP, his first on the label since 2020 featuring four new percussive, bass-laden originals and two remixes from Desto and Thrived.

One of the longest-running members of the Ruffhouse crew, Helsinki-based Koala has been part of the collective since 2014, appearing on every one of the label’s Rufftrax compilations and releasing his ‘Energia’ EP in late 2020, which saw support from the likes of Batu, Akito, and Emerald among others.

‘Unnerve’ picks up where ‘Energia’ left off, displaying Koala’s broad palette of percussive sounds that veer from melodic to dissonant, from playful to eerie, and from leftfield to dancefloor-focussed.

Opening three tracks ‘Cloudwinds’, ‘Infratom’, and ‘Hailstones’ encapsulate Koala’s signature sound to a tee; with drumline-inspired percussion, minimalist melodic elements, and weighty bass. The EP’s fourth track ‘Scale Off’ sees Koala venturing into more experimental territory, led by a monster beat that’s equal parts reggaeton, halftime D&B, and drill.

Providing the remixes for the EP are Koala’s fellow Helsinkian Desto, who brings a more laidback, broken feel to ‘Cloudwinds’ – and Thrived, a duo made up of Berlin artists DJ Ion and Tymotica, whose rework of ‘Hailstones’ warps the track into an intense 160bpm grime-footwork hybrid.

‘Unnerve’ will be released on Ruffhouse Industries on 25th March 2022 on all digital platforms.
